![]() Bike games for kids – our collectionįurther technological innovations led to the creation of lots of purpose-built models for different terrains, sports, and proficiency levels. With wheel sizes more like those of modern bicycles, rear-wheel propulsion, and pneumatic tires, these bikes are far more like the ones we use today. However, the introduction of the safety bicycle made the bike far more widely popular. So much so, that some models became known as ‘Boneshakers’!īecause these bikes were so dangerous and uncomfortable, they were often considered appropriate transport only for sporty and showy young men. In addition, lots of early models had fairly rigid frames and steel hoops for wheels, which made for a rather bumpy ride. The large front wheels of these models allowed for greater speed, but also made them very difficult to ride – and dangerous! Hitting a pothole in the road could easily send the rider flying, and deadly accidents were not all that uncommon. Later models, such as the penny-farthing high wheeler added foot-pedals mounted onto a huge front wheel. Because these early bicycles were often used by dandy gentlemen, people sometimes made fun by calling them ‘dandyhorses’. To drive it, you used handlebars to steer, and two wheels to roll forward, but the rider had to sit in the saddle and use their legs to make big strides, pushing against the ground to move forward. It was in fact, as the German name suggests, a sort of running machine. The resulting contraption, the Draisienne or Laufmaschine looked a bit like a modern bicycle but had no foot-pedals. The first bicycle was invented by a civil servant in Germany, Karl von Drais, who wanted to figure out an alternative way to get about quickly without a horse. Today, the musical compositions in BMI’s repertoire, from chart toppers to perennial favorites, span all genres of music and are consistently among the most-performed hits of the year. In 1939, BMI created a groundbreaking open-door policy becoming the only performing rights organization to welcome and represent the creators of blues, jazz, country, and American roots music. The Company negotiates music license agreements and distributes the fees it generates as royalties to its affiliated writers and publishers when their songs are performed in public. BMI represents the public performance rights in over 17 million musical works created and owned by more than 1.1 million songwriters, composers, and music publishers. “The decrees make government mandated rate courts the final arbiters of fees-especially problematic in the rapidly evolving digital marketplace where an absence of market benchmarks may make that impractical, and where the consent decrees restrict the courts from customizing arrangements to address the full array of issues that may arise.Celebrating over 80 years of service to songwriters, composers, music publishers and businesses, Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI®) is a global leader in music rights management, serving as an advocate for the value of music. “Today, songwriters and composers are too often denied fair compensation for their work because BMI and ASCAP, the two major performance rights organizations that license these services, are regulated by antiquated consent decrees, conceived in a different century for a different world,” said Horowitz. According to UMPG, the market, rather than a rate court judge, determined appropriate terms. Publishers say that the consent-decree interferes with their ability to get market rates, which is why some of the larger ones first began withdrawing their digital rights. While sources say that BMG, UMPG and Sony/ATV had either entered into short-term deals or were informing digital services that they didn’t need to worry about copyright infringement suits for the short-term, its unclear where those negotiations now stand.īut for now, the license means that UMPG and its songwriters and composers will not be subject to the Pandora/BMI rate court proceeding. Pandora is not the only digital service believed to be facing this issue because of the BMI Judge ruling. Pandora Faces Setback As Judge Rules Blanket License Doesn’t Include Songs of Publishers Leaving BMIĪfter that ruling UMPG and Pandora then entered into direct negotiations for a license for UMPG’s BMI repertoire, which ended in a license agreement signed on Dec. Zach Horowitz Steps Down as Chairman/CEO Universal Music Publishing Group 31, Pandora’s BMI blanket license would no-longer cover UMPG songs. ![]() 18, the BMI judge agreed that publishers had to be all in or all out, but in his judgement, he ruled that there was no interim consent-decree license, which meant that if UMG decided to withdraw from BMI after Dec. In the case of Pandora, however, the Judge ruled that the service had an interim consent-decree license, which is good through Dec. In September, the ASCAP rate judge ruled that they could, but publishers would have to pull all their rights, not just digital. ![]() The agreement between UMGP and Pandora comes after a legal battle over whether UMPG and other publishers had the right to withdraw digital licensing from the performance rights organizations. “This arrangement will allow music fans to enjoy our music on Pandora while protecting our songwriters and composers.” “Our deal with Pandora is another step toward reaching our goal of ensuring that there is a vibrant digital marketplace where both music services and the songwriters and composers who make those services possible can thrive,” UMPG chairman and CEO Zach Horowitz said in a statement. Universal Music Publishing Group has signed a license agreement with Pandora that allows the digital service to play its songs in the BMI repertoire. ![]() ![]() For more efficient flights, companies will need multiple warehouses storing identical products to deliver to neighborhoods. You could have a single warehouse and fly drones until their batteries die, says Samaras, but that defeats the efficient nature of drone usage. It also means that providers would need more space dedicated to shipping and maintaining drones, which means more warehouses. But in urban environments, people ordering a cup of coffee or breakfast bagel first thing in the morning might not be a feasible option, and could lead to increased pollution. Indeed, the promise of drone delivery means everyone can order everything and have it arrive almost instantly. A company like Amazon might create drone delivery facilities to make good on faster guaranteed delivery times, but that would also mean more facilities to operate and maintain, and more of an environmental impact. “That’s a much deeper and more important question.” “Do we want hundreds or thousands of drones over all of our cities?” says Samaras. “You don’t necessarily want your computer monitor being delivered by drone.”īut speedy drone delivery in cities might be less eco-friendly when carrying heavier items, and they could also be more of a noisy nuisance than delivery via electric vehicle. “There are other areas where an electric cargo bike is for sure going to be better, and there are areas where maybe a bigger electric truck would be best,” he says. Samaras notes that drone deliveries won’t phase out more traditional methods of transporting goods, but will instead complement them while being more environmentally friendly. A 2018 study coauthored by him discovered that, over certain distances, drone delivery is more efficient than ground-based delivery, especially if drones are traveling at higher speeds. The less time a drone spends in the air is a primary determinant of its energy consumption according to Carnegie Melon University Professor Costa Samaras. ![]() When it comes to making deliveries efficient and environmentally friendly, faster seems to be better. Routes are determined based on factors like distance, weather conditions and airspace regulations, and deliveries are dropped in front of homes using a winch, with no human interaction required. Wing’s drone deliveries are automated, but monitored by pilots who function more as air traffic controllers than anything else. location in Christianburg, Va., and Finland “in the coming months.” Wing, which grew its operations in Australia this year, is looking to expand from its single U.S. The delivery drone company, previously part of Google’s “moonshot” initiatives, reached a pivotal milestone, announcing in August that it made its hundred thousandth delivery. In Logan, Australia, suburban drone deliveries are taking off, thanks to Alphabet subsidiary Wing. Google parent company Alphabet is forging ahead with its own version of the futuristic delivery service. Still, as Amazon struggles, other companies are racing to be the first to offer widespread service. The initiative has plenty of challenges, however, including the need for more warehouses and concerns about airspace safety with a potential sky full of whizzing drones. The Biden administration has expressed interest in developing the field of drone delivery and logistics, and for uses like infrastructure inspection. Drones have potential to be even more efficient and environmentally friendly than a modern electric delivery van. It recently discontinued Amazon Echo Look, an Alexa-enabled device that scanned a user’s outfit and offered questionable fashion advice.Įven in 2021, the idea of drone delivery still sounds somewhat fantastical, but widespread use of these small aircraft could have an enormous impact. One moving shot depicts a tearful Baker, crumpled in the bathtub with his trumpet, pressing the instrument to his face as blood drains from his mouth. The fact that he does his own trumpet playing is also fitting, since this was the period in Baker's life where he was desperately struggling to regain his talents, and this makes his mediocre blows all the more painful. ![]() Hawke gives the musician a rough boyishness that emphasizes both his bottomless charm and his frustrating immaturity. We should be thankful he finally got his chance here. Twenty years ago, Hawke nearly played a younger Baker in a proposed Richard Linklater movie that never got off the ground. (The real Baker, with his handsome features, occasionally dabbled in acting, so the idea that he could play himself isn't too far-fetched.) The result is a unique kind of harmony between the fact and the fiction, occasionally overwrought in the moments where Budreau focuses on petty jealousies between Baker and Jane. The patient, passionate Ejogo reenacts the inner conflict every woman in Baker's life may have gone through, even as she plays that exact conflict in character. Budreau repeats the essential themes of his subject's early career on a different register in the movie-in-a-movie. Like the "cool jazz" style Baker helped popularize, Born to be Blue is really a contrapuntal film. The conceit sounds like one of those "look at me, I'm a movie" gimmicks so beloved by mediocre indie filmmakers, but in practice, it's just clever enough to work. ![]() In the present, he attempts to keep playing while deemphasizing the trumpet that made him famous, by blowing only long, simple notes and relying more on his singing voice for entire sets. We see some reenactments of Baker's hard-driving prime as part of the make-believe film, shot in black-and-white and with the frenetic pace of a really jamming hi-hat solo. These two rejected figures of the '60s - the druggie has-been jazz legend and the struggling actress of color - try to support each other as they bounce between New York, Los Angeles, and Baker's prairie hometown of Yale, Oklahoma. All that stuff is more or less from Baker's actual life, but it's mixed in with a bold embellishment: He's approached by a Hollywood producer to play himself in a movie about his life, and promptly falls for Jane (Carmen Ejogo), the actress playing the second wife he divorced. The film begins as Baker, on the mend from the heroin addiction that almost killed him in the mid-1960s, attempts to mount a comeback, despite a savage beating from a drug dealer that destroys his front teeth and his embouchure. It takes a moment to get our footing at the start - writer-director Robert Budreau doesn't make it easy. ![]() Taut and Tight is well hidden from the naked eye-truly a woman's best kept beauty secret. There is simply nothing else on the market that offers such instant,dramatic,risk-and pain free results. It is possibly the greatest fashion breakthrough since the invention of the bra.
